Urgent Needs

The Excellence in Child Health Fund supports the most critical needs of children in BC today. Only through a continued investment in research, education and care can we make progress in our mission to create a better world for children.

Contributions to the Excellence in Child Health Fund go to the area of the greatest need, providing the essential services, research and advanced technology necessary to make leading pediatric care accessible to our province’s one million children.

  • Research into childhood illnesses and human diseases:
Researchers at the Child & Family Research Institute are improving the lives and health of children and families by researching treatments and cures for childhood diseases and training the newest generation of clinician-researchers and scientists.
  • Children’s Hospital Equipment and Capital Needs:
At BC Children’s and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children, our equipment needs are distinct from those of other hospitals. We require different sizes and kinds of equipment to treat patients ranging from a premature infant who is just hours old to a 16-year-old youth. It is critical that our children receive optimal care through the use of the most up-to-date equipment – equipment that is less invasive or helps to decrease the duration of their treatment or hospital stay.

  • Health Promotion and Education:
Through our affiliation with The University of British Columbia, Children’s Hospital and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children are the principal centres of pediatric medical training in the province. Specialized medical teaching is made possible, in part, through fellowships that support physicians as they learn about a pediatric sub-specialty. Demand for these fellows is high and secured funding is often a key factor for candidates who are deciding whether to build their career with us.
  • Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children:
As the only facility of its kind in BC, Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children sees more than 5,000 children with disabilities across the province. Sunny Hill serves children and youth with developmental disabilities like autism, loss of vision or hearing, prenatal exposure to alcohol or drugs, genetic conditions that affect growth, or when head and spine injuries require rehabilitation.
