For more than a third of their lives, Monica and Tom Brennan of West Vancouver have been helping kids in one of the sweetest ways: making jam. The couple started selling homemade preserves and donating proceeds after their granddaughter, Emily, had several operations at BC Children’s in her early years.

Dr. Dzung Vo is the director of BC Children’s new Centre for Mindfulness, which launched this past June with the help of donor support. As one of the first mindfulness centres at a children’s hospital globally, its ultimate vision is to create a culture of mindfulness at BC Children’s that will help kids, teens, families and health care providers here and around the world. We sat down with Dr. Vo to learn more.

Nineteen thousand. That’s about how many needles 14-year-old Jayden Gill has had to use throughout his life to manage his type 1 diabetes. It means he’s had to prick his body five times a day—every day—since he was two and a half years old to check his blood sugar levels and receive insulin injections.

Last year, more than 93,000 kids visited BC Children’s Hospital. Many of them, over the holidays. More than 440 of BC’s South Asian philanthropic, business and community leaders came together tonight to raise $742,495 for BC Children’s Hospital at the 11th Annual A Night of Miracles (ANOM) Gala. Guests in attendance represented the largest turnout in this event’s history. Since the gala’s inception, the South Asian community has cumulatively raised $6.1 million, demonstrating its long-standing commitment to providing the best health care imaginable to kids across the province.

Dr. Shazhan Amed, head of the Division of Endocrinology at BC Children’s Hospital, is working as part of a team to transform diabetes care throughout the province. We sat down with her to learn more about her team’s work to help improve the lives of kids in BC who are living with diabetes.

Pain. While most adults can express this quite easily (and quite loudly even), it’s a different situation with infants or kids who are unable to talk. But now, new research led by Dr. Ran Goldman has shown that facial recognition software technology could improve how health care providers measure pain in young children.
